This is where the real fun starts. High Dynamic Range Image (HDRI). One of the best things since whipped cream. HDRI allows for floating point values instead of integers for it's colors. Which means that it can hold a LOT more information about the brightness in an image. And that can be used for very realistic lighting for 3D scenes.
HDRI is NOT synonymous to a panoramic image!!!!
Apparently, a lot of people think panoramic images are HDRIs. But this isn't true. However, HDRI often IS panoramic, because this is the best way of incorporating it into a 3D scene. But all too often, I've downloaded 'HDR images' that were regular panoramic images.
Basically, an HDRI allows you to alter the exposure of a photograph AFTER taking it. (but you could also make computer generated HDRIs, of course)
